About Social Entrepreneurship 101: Kenya 2009

This volunteer internship will be based in Nairobi, with sites in Kibera, Kimathi and other locations in Nairobi. Kibera is a poor and largely populated community where local youth have to start small businesses to generate income to support their families.

Teams of six students from UBC and Strathmore University in Nairobi will help young people to develop their own business plans, through a three-week seminar on business plan development.

The project is in its fourth year and UBC students will be building upon the lessons learned from previous years’ SE101 projects. We welcome applications from the UBC community who are willing to learn and teach basic business skills. Selected participants travel and work together as a team under the direction of a Sauder School of Business faculty member.

Requirements:
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn how to work with others to teach about writing business plans.
  • Prior international travel experience as well as previous volunteer experience is a plus.
  • Experience in business, education, and/or youth leadership.
  • An interest in development work.
  • Project members will be required to participate in fundraising activities, educational training and teaching preparation between February and June 2009.
Logistics:
  • Accommodation in a guesthouse and all meals are included through the fundraising done by the team.
  • Participants will be expected to cover travel expenses (including airfare, visas, travel health insurance, and inoculations). There may be some scholarships available to help defray airfare costs.
  • This project will take place during July and August; specific dates will be determined during the spring.
Application:

The application for 2010 can be found online. The deadline to apply is November 6, 2009.
